One key takeaway from Baby Driver camerawork is that they have effectively used camera movement to accommodate Baby on his journey to the coffee shops for these long continuous shots. From panning left, right, zoom, tracking, tilting. Not only added more perspective to the audience but prevented boredom from watching this long scene.

One notable thing for our future project is that Baby Driver and Guardian of the Galaxy both use wide angle shots for introducing the title.  

Since this opening sequence is a long continuous shot, there’s not much about the cutting techniques. However, the non-diegetic soundtrack which Carter Baby on his way to the coffee shop has definitely created a very funky environment alongside with the synchronisation between Baby and the song lyrics.  

Mise-en-scene 

Since the setting is in downtown Chicago, there’s high-rise buildings on pretty much every corner of the street including the one that Baby headed out, there’s also a use of background characters which create a more vibrant atmosphere for this opening sequence. Baby is wearing an iconic cloth which is white T-shirt and black vest, along with the black sunglasses with a pair of earphones. 

Sound design

The opening sequence is covered up mostly by the non-diegetic soundtrack. But there’s also the use of ambient sound which could be cops siren, people talking, coffee shop’s bell, etc. These are one of the factor that prevent the boredom for this opening sequence, and added to the vibrant of Baby’s world

Narrative

Based on this opening sequence, we can tell that the whole movie would be surrounded by Baby and his journey, obviously because he’s the main character. However we could detect that from the beginning of this sequence, Baby along with 3 other people are driving away to the horizon with a green sedan, and the other one in the parking lot which is a red sports car. Story would definitely be about some chaotic racing scene.
