Opening Sequence Analysis - Baby Driver

Camera Work
Long shot use in the very first second of the opening sequence, shows a team of 4 people including Baby entering a green sedan and then driving away while the depth of field becomes shallower allowing space for some credit to be introduced. A wide shot in low angle showing upward emphasises a tall building where the film’s title has been introduced. It’s then tilting downward to show Baby step out of the building in his iconic clothing, earphones and sunglasses. Walking in the street where Baby’s movement has been tracked by many angles and forward, backward movement. While ordering coffee inside a coffee shop, close-up angles have been used to show Baby holding a tray of 4 cups of coffee.  This detail has told that apart from him, there’s also 3 teammates of Baby’s in the movie, a creative way of introducing other characters. While heading into the offices, there’s a use of close-up angles camera to show the tray of coffee, however, what’s worth mentioning is the darkness inside this office. Usually dark is connote with something bad gonna happen

Editting
While the whole opening sequence is within a continuous shot, there’s not much of cutting techniques here but it also has its own meaning that has been encoded by the producer. These unbroken shots accommodate Baby’s with a blues rock music which somehow connote that Baby’s life is related to music, which is also answered why he always appears with a pair of white earphones. Another interesting part about editing of this opening sequence is that Baby’s action match with the song lyrics, the synchronisation of this help to captivate audience interest within the opening sequence as well. Use of natural lighting and high-key lighting in the first 2 minutes to show the calmness of Baby’s world, how normal the world would be. The last 30 seconds are filled up with low-key lighting. This often connotes some criminal activities which also introduce a second face of Baby.

Sound design
cops siren, vehicles engine, etc. However, there’s a use of soundtrack here which is Bellbottom-a blues rock song which helps to energise the scene as well as to hype the opening part of the sequence. Apart from this song which is non-diegetic, the rest are mainly diegetic. The effective use of both diegetic and non-diegetic has create a wise multi-perspective scene in which it make Baby’s world more lively and active.
Mise-en-scene
Some of the iconography of Baby Driver is Baby’s clothes, white earphones and sunglasses are introduced in the very first bit of the opening sequence. Apart from that there’s a lot of background actors pretending to be the people in Baby’s world. Since the setting was in Chicago, the streets were decent, not crowded but not remotely. It;s like a quick introduction of the place where Baby’s going to drive to escape.  While in the first part as I have mentioned that Baby and his team are driving in a green sedan, next to it was a red sports car which is also one of Baby’s iconography.

Key takeaway
1. Use of soundtrack to make opening sequence more attractive and set-up overall mood for the opening sequence
2. Ensure that all the character's iconography are showed
