Sypnosis
It’s noon and Billy is glued to his phone playing his favorite video game, the rays of sunshine shining through his phone which was the time an “anonymous” phone call hits, Billy furiously accepts the phone call and the caller inform that his package has been delivered. As a young “mafia” boss, Billy told his gang’s members to take the delivered package upstairs where his office was located.
Whilst Billy and his gang were going away for a quick lunch, Jackie out of nowhere was now sneaking outside of Billy’s office and his trial to break in, he was a newbie therefore it takes him awhile to successfully go inside the office. The primary target was definitely the package that Billy just retrieved from.
While having lunch, Billy felt butterflies in his stomach and his gut feeling told him that there’s something wrong with the package and rushed up to his office to check if things were okay. Turns out, it’s not okay. The doors were unlocked and the package was gone. Looking around the corridor of his apartment, one of the gang members shows that there’s someone traveling down the elevator holding something very similar to Billy’s package. They shouted “ĐUỔI NÓ” (Chase him) and quickly running down the stairs. It seems like the adrenaline of Billy and the gang member were at its highest, they’ve managed to run downstairs and ride their bike chasing Jackie.
From chasing each other by bare feet, they’re now chasing each other by pedaling. The race between Jackie versus Billy and his gang member does not happen very long because Jackie has run into a dead end, at the end of the road it is Billy’s other gang member waiting for Jackie to arrive. He has no choice but to leave the scene as quick as possible and leave Billy and the gang with a “fake” package with a note “better luck next time”
Purpose
The plot of this opening sequence is based on our team favorite hobby which is cycling, along with our genre research about action movies. We have decided to mix some of the plot in Baby Driver along with the cycling to invent this opening sequence.First of all, character is one of the most important factors that would contribute to the overall value of the opening sequence, therefore we want our character to impress the audience the best. We’ve come up with the idea of building the character based on our personality, so that most of the scene would not involve a lot of acting but similar to role playing. Speaking about character, one of the factors that helps our audience to differentiate the two main characters would be the way of them communicating. As a young mafia boss, he needed to have a powerful and assertive voice
to decode a feeling of authority and leadership. While Jackie was a newbie thief, he needed to have a nervous and trembling voice to decode for a shy and nervous feeling.Second of all, the character could be represented as similar to their personality but also similar to their actual role in the opening sequence. Not only are the 2 main characters important but Billy’s gang members also play a crucial role to make the opening sequence more interesting and appealing. The gang member should have a calm and unwavering loyalty to the boss which is Billy, this make sure that the gang member were not showing a lot of personality and acknowledge the audience that they’re under Billy’ authority, this helps to decode that these guy are very loyal to Billy, ready to do whatever they’re told to do.
Target Audience
This film's target audience is mainly in the age group of 14-16 years old which is high school students but still interesting enough to 17-24 years old. This age group would be targeted since we used the stereotypical representation of a teenage gang that features bullies in schools.
Since young generation (Gen Z) are known for being a "tech savvy", it's familiar for them to watch movie in online application such as Netflix or VieOn (for Vietnamese viewer) with 94.7% of the respondent choose. Preferably, they're also enjoying watching movie in the cinema as well with 73.7% people choosing this as an option. As a result, we would aim for a independent release. Considering these trends, we plan to pursue an independent release strategy to cater to both preferences effectively.
Visual Content
There would be 3 main places that were included in this opening sequence. The first one, which is Billy’s office, will have low-key lighting to intimidate and decode a mafia look alike atmosphere. There would be a lot of stationery and gadgets used such as pens, books, laptop and a phone here to make it look more like an office, also the props used needed to be in black since black connotations for Mafia in many movies, so we could apply in ours as well.
The use of close up camera angles would help the audience to see the reaction of Billy and his gang member in detail, there’re
also the use of medium shots to show the sets in general and two shots to show the dialogue between Billy and his gangs. There’s also the use of ambient sounds from the A/C or fans running in the background. The second location, which is the pathway leading to the main road, would have trees and shops along the way and the use of natural lighting would create a big contrast between Outside world and Billy’s office, there could be the use of Binary Opposition theory here which is between Normal life and Mafia life. We would need to prepare a package for Billy. In these shots, typically we will use tracking the walking of the gang member, close-up with low angles to show the scene where the gang received the package. The use of non-diegetic sounds would be good in this scene, such as the footsteps of the gang member.
In addition to that, one of our racing spots which is located in the road (middle land which often have less vehicles), we planning to use natural light there as well for a more “realistics” look, the camera would be a high angle, we could use the overpass and filming up there, this shots is also
inspire from Fast 5 as well. The last location in our primary filming place would be the dead-end roads nearby the pathway, there would be a use of natural and low-key lighting which could be use as a fusion between the last 2 location, the fusion could also be used to connote that the opening sequence has come to a new level in the hierarchy of Todorov which would be the recognizing of disruption and attempt to fix the disruption. Apart from that, this set would be a mixture between the 2 other places. The opening titles will appear after the 1st scene happens where Billy receives the phone call from an anonymous
caller and assigns one of his gangs to take the package, the camera will track Billy’s hands and move into the gang member, the transitional phase between the 2 will be where the scene would appear.
As this movie is inspired mainly by Baby Driver, the fashion would be very casual and yet modern as well. The camera angle are also inspire by Baby Driver and Fast and Furious 5 as well.
